“The simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as of a precise organization of forms which give that event it's proper expression”, Cartier-Bresson's description of the decisive moment is fitting for traditional action photographs of sports. For varsity athletes, their time representing their school is a celebration of the years of hard work and sweat put into developing themselves physically and mentally for their sport. An action shot alone is not enough to represent them as an individual who took a unique path from any of their teammates which they now compete with at the highest level.

The series of diptychs are comprised of one game or event simulated moment, the other is a black and white headshot. In the action shot, the athlete is dominating the scene in which they compete, through the use of artificial lighting, composition, and vantage point. The portrait is close and intimate with the athlete being isolated by the plain background. The motivation behind creating the work was to explore the relationship between the athlete and their sport.
